Websites have now become the standard modus operandi for spreading malicious software to infect personal and corporate environments. A large number of benign and well-meaning websites are compromised everyday by hackers inserting malicious code to, in turn, infect the computers used by visitors to the hacked site.
One of the ways to combat this is to develop a website reputation mechanism which can warn of potential threats before visiting a compromised site.

A report by StoptheHacker.com shows results of a test they conducted where 350 websites known to be malicious where checked by a number of the leading website-reputation service.

Here’s an excerpt of what they reported:

“At StopTheHacker.com (Jaal LLC) we have conducted tests with 350 domain names, all of which have been reported as malicious by volunteers of various blacklists.

The aim of the test is to:

1. Identify how accurate the website reputation services are
2. What is the overlap in terms of safe/unsafe websites

We have found some interesting results which we present in this article. First we detail the parameters of the testing procedure to provide an idea of how the test was set up.

Website-reputation services test results graph

Website-reputation services vary wildly in their opinions.

Website-reputation services vary wildly in their opinions.

Note that all 350 domains, were reported as malicious, and were collected from malware.com.br on December 18, 2009. The blue column (maximum 350) indicates the number of sites that the website-reputation service correctly identified reported bad sites. The orange column (maximum 350) indicates the number of sites that the website-reputation services incorrectly identified reported malicious sites as safe.

We compared the reputation provided by each website-reputation service and observe how many websites are marked as unsafe, safe, untested, maybe-unsafe/caution/potentially-unsafe, unreachable.

* McAfee Siteadvisor
* Norton Safeweb
* Google SafeBrowsing
* Comodo Siteinspector

The date that we conducted this test was: December 21, 2009.

We have identified some of the most interesting results below:

1. McAfee Siteadvisor marked 32.5% of Domains as Unsafe, 22% as Safe, 43% as Untested and 1.7% as Potentially-unsafe.
2. Norton Safeweb marked 50.86% of Domains as Unsafe, 43.71% as Safe, 2.29% as Untested and 3.14% as Potentially-unsafe.
3. Google SafeBrowsing marked 10.86% of Domains as Unsafe, 89.14% as Safe. Note: the presence of the hash of the domain name being tested, on the google malware hash list, is interpreted as “unsafe” while the absence in interpreted as “safe”.
4. Comodo Siteinspector marked 0.29% of Domains as Unsafe, 98.86% as Safe and 0.86% as Unreachable. Note: after feedback from Comodo, a retest was conducted, accuracy changed from 0.29% -> 1.2%.”

So this test shows that you cannot rely solely on these website reputation services to provide accurate security against malicious websites. THey do add an extra layer for sure, but need to used in conjuntion with other anti-malware security tools.

A new report from TrendLab, Trend Micro’s research and development and support centre, warns of the need to stay safe online.

It has released a report warning users of various threats online. Such threats include greeting cards with viruses, fake charity sites and gift cards that take your personal data without your knowing.

The report lists the top 10 tips for staying safe while online.

Here they are:

1. Make sure your security software is working and up-to-date. “It’s always surprising to hear that many internet users do not have up-to-date security software,” Trend Micro Australia’s key partner’s manager Adam Biviano says. “Especially if you use a laptop on an unprotected wireless network, such as a café, you need to have the most up-to-date protection to stop online theft of your details and, ultimately, your identity.”

2. Make sure that you install, update and maintain firewalls and intrusion detection software. “All the protection in the world is only so effective if firewalls are maintained,” Biviano says. “If your firewall settings are set to minimal, or turned off altogether, then it won’t matter what software you have or how up-to-date it is, hackers and thieves will get by it.”

3. Check with your internet service provider (ISP) to see what level of protection they are providing to your network. “Some ISPs offer a very good level of security while others offer almost none. Give your provider a call, and if they don’t offer the level you think you need, purchase software that does. It is always better to be safe than sorry.”

4. Make sure you use an anti-spam product for each email address you have. “We all know the scenario. You return from a well-earned holiday to find your inbox crammed with unwanted and unwarranted emails and those important emails being rejected because your inbox is over its size limit. A simple anti-spam solution will help keep your inbox for the email that you want to read.”

5. Watch out for web pages that require software installation. “Agreeing to the installation of one program is often a backdoor for unwarranted programs, malware and spyware. Always check the end-user agreement before you click ‘agree’ and if the program you want also installs other programs, cancel the application. Sometimes, you never know what you’re agreeing to.”

6. Utilise a website reputation service. “Simple and easy to use web-reputation services, that are often free-of-charge, are perhaps the easiest way to ensure that the websites you’re visiting are safe. If you have a web-reputation service, it will warn you of unsafe pages before you click on them or enter your details.” Don’t rely on these solely as this report shows the big range of results from the leading website reputation services.

7. Regularly scan your computers at home, you use a number of free of low cost tools for this. “Many people are tempted to check their work emails over the holidays, or simply browse the web. Keep your family safe from online threats with free and easy to use software that continually monitors for spam, web threats, viruses and other threats that could pose a danger to your home computer.”

8. Stay informed about the latest out-breaks and threats. “By simply visiting a threat tracking website, businesses and consumers can check what’s out there, and whether it will affect them. If you notice an outbreak of spyware that steals people’s details, among other things, it’s easy to avoid the web or maintain a greater level of vigilance until the security companies can plug holes or uncover the criminals prowling the web.”

9. Watch out for unexpected or strange-looking emails. “Simply don’t open any emails that you don’t recognise. By opening an email you could be exposing your computer to harmful malware and spyware. If you don’t recognise the sender, don’t open it.”

10. Ensure you have the best level of protection for your needs. “Anti-virus programs are a dime a dozen, but not all protect you from the right threats these days are not just viruses that disrupt your computer and delete information but rather professional criminals who want your personal details, banking information and credit card numbers. Simple anti-virus software won’t stop these threats so you might need to upgrade to a full web protection software package.”

iPad

iPad overgrown iPhone?

No, it is not and overgrown iPhone…… it is an overgrown iPod Touch!

Well that is what the first take-apart reverse engineering  reviews have revealed.

There is no new technology in this device, apart from the bigger screen and huge battery, that sets it apart from the iPad Touch. Read the report here.

iPad Top 10 biggest disappointments:

  1. The keyboard – typing is not as easy as you might hope. To be used for email and short messages only.
  2. No camera – could have been great for video calling.
  3. No Flash support -  it displays websites in full size, but some sites won’t show at all due to this omission.
  4. Weighty – Heavier than the biggest Kindle, the iPad could be hard to hold one-handed for a long time.
  5. No memory card slot – photos must be side-loaded from a computer as there is no space for memory cards without adding an adapter.
  6. No GPS chip in Wi-Fi model – disappointing.
  7. No HD video output – you can connect it to a TV but videos won’t be high-definition. Best it can do is a resolution of 576p.
  8. No multi-tasking – can only do one thing at a time, just like the iPhone. Should be fixed with iPhone version 4 software.
  9. No iBooks in Australia – iPad won’t live up to its full potential until they arrive.
  10. Delayed accessories – keyboard and memory card adapter will make up for important omissions, but are not yet available.

iPad Top10 Best Features:

  1. Great screen – large, bright and colourful.  LED-backlighting for brightness, and IPS (in-plane switching) for good viewing on an angle.
  2. Speedy – Apple’s 1GHz processor has it screening at a great pace. This processor is slower than those in most netbooks, but it is clearly competent.
  3. iPad apps – Plenty of iPad apps for users to be grateful for. Games benefit a lot from the bigger screen.
  4. Photo shows – it looks like a digital photo frame but does a better job with slideshows. The iPhoto-like app  lets you group photos and makes them easy to show off.
  5. iWork – Apple’s document, spreadsheet and presentation apps have been reworked for the iPad as downloads for $US10. A bargain!
  6. Long battery life – the Amazon Kindle’s battery lasts longer, but with 10 hours of video playback, the iPad has real staying power as a portable DVD player.
  7. Screen lock – ever tried to use an app while laying down? Automatic screen orientation is a real pain. To fix this, Apple has replaced the mute switch with a screen lock switch.
  8. Accessories – more accessories than the iPod. Add a physical keyboard, USB or memory card port, or a case that acts as a stand…when they are available.
  9. Rugged body – sturdy body designed to withstand everyday knocks. If you don’t drop it or use it as a coaster, it shouldn’t fall apart by itself.
  10. The price – $US499 is not bad for such an entertaining gadget.

Our Verdict: Nothing really new here folks. Apart from the bigger screen and longer lasting battery, this is for early adopters, those techie pioneers who have to have the first of every new gadget. If that is you, then go get one! Savvy technophiles will wait for for next versions with the innevitable bug/glitch fixes and added features for the same or lower cost.
